I’ve a creative mindset that is always bursting with fresh ideas. Having a creative background has been a benefit and a curse. Those in the field will know what I mean. I’ve a real genuine passion for patterns. The goal is to be able to turn that into a full time career and not just a wish. Those that know me well, know that I am quite an observant and an adventurous person. They know I love walking the streets of any city or spending time in the great outdoors. They would also know that close to hand would be my camera. Photography is something I love and have always enjoyed. It has also formed the foundations of my patterns. My submissions for the theme Micronature started life off as individual images. Some of nature, flowers and the like, or buildings and landscape.
As I mentioned before having a creative background has been beneficial. Through my knowledge I am able to manipulate multiple images, hues and textures until I come up with a desired outcome and sometimes the fun is found in the happy accidents. The results are far from the original and in this case are like looking through a microscope deep within an orgasm to a cellular level. With a few tweaks we can see just how beautiful our surroundings truly are.
Additionally the same can be said for my submissions to the theme, Optimism. I’m old school. No, not that old and at 42, with two kids I can’t be. But I can relate to the time and that retro feel. Growing up I was surround by nature and plenty pops of colour, be it from the clothes my parents wore or dressed me in, my surroundings as I grew up in the Caribbean, to the food I ate. It was easy to consume. This was my intent, to produce patterns that are bold, colourful and vibrant. I hope they create a sense of nostalgia and uplifts ones spirits.
My name is Chevon Hylton and I thank you for taking the time and for the
opportunity to participate in the Solstudio Textile Design Awards.
